Biogradska Gora

Biogradska Gora is Montenegro's oldest national park , and covers an area of 5,400ha between the Tara and Lim rivers. This wild and isolated region is largely primeval forest, one of only three such virgin forests left in Europe. Some of the trees here are over 500 years old.

The area is abundant in flora and vegetation, with over 2,000 plant species present in the park. It is also home to a wide variety of birds and mammals, including bears, wolves, wild boar and eagles.

The area was first recognised as possessing great ecological value in 1878, when Nikola Petrovic, the country's final king, declared it protected under law. Today the park is under strict preservation control to ensure its natural evolution.

The park's name comes from the largest of its five glacial lakes, the beautiful emerald Biogradska jezero, which lies shielded by mountain peaks at the heart of great forest. The glittering water here reflects the towering trees around its shores, and its colour changes subtly throughout the day.
