Accommodation in the Boka Kotorska area

Boka Kotorska

A huge gash in the coastline cuts over 20 miles through towering pine-clad mountains, which fall dramatically into the calm turquoise water. This is Europe's most southerly fjord, the astoundingly beautiful Boka Kotorska. The great limestone mountains protect the coast from the severe northern weather; and in this milder Mediterranean climate mimosa, oleander and wild flowering pomegranate grow around the bay. Picturesque villages with honey-coloured stone cottages and imposing mansions are strung along the shores here.

For several hundred years the Republic of Venice was a significant presence in the inner part of the bay and the Venetian influence is evident in the architecture here. Yet this area always remained essentially the domain of indigenous seamen who were greatly renowned for their maritime skills. Beneath these deep waters lie wrecks from great sea battles and piracy, waiting to be explored. Divers will also appreciate the many caves and plentiful fish in the bay.

The wonderful medieval town of Kotor is the largest in the fjord and was once one of the most important ports in the world. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beautiful Baroque town of Perast lies nearby, just across the water. Visit Prcanj and its impressive church, Birth of our Lady, a vast structure which bears witness to the past wealth of this village. The church took 200 years to build and houses a great collection of sculpture and painting; in the sacristy is a silver cup which once belonged to Lord Byron.

If you feel like spoiling yourself, head to the little village of Morinj:standing by a stream amongst lush vegetation is an ancient stone mill, now a charming and luxurious restaurant, Catovica Mlini. The mill has been owned by the same family for 200 years and serves wonderful seafood dishes as well as delicious home-made products, including wine and cheese.

The beautiful, undeveloped peninsula of Lustica is a perfect place to explore by car or boat. With its lovely unspoilt fishing villages, miles of meadowland, warm turquoise water and hidden coves it makes a relaxing place to spend a day. At the tip of the peninsula is the peaceful harbour of Rose, a lovely spot to stop for refreshment.
