Kotor

Situated at the southern end of the magnificent Boka Kotorska is the medieval fortress city of Kotor, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The two and a half miles of massive, millennium-old walls enclosing the old town are twice the length of Dubrovnik's and rise spectacularly up the near vertical cliff behind the city. Within these mighty walls lie Venetian houses with shuttered windows and an incredible collection of palaces, churches, museums and an impressive cathedral. No vehicles are allowed within the city gates.

Kotor's most famous landmark, the Cathedral of St Tryphon, is a marvellous example of Romanesque architecture. Look for the remains of 14th century frescos and visit the treasury which houses domestic and Venetian jewelry dating from the 14th to the 20th century. Close by is the Renaissance Pima Palace with its beautiful baroque balustrade and the 17th century Grgurina Palace which today is home to Kotor's Maritime museum. Inside there is a wonderful collection of paintings depicting great sea battles, as well as weaponry, costumes and furniture.

Kotor is a maze of narrow alleys and broad marble-paved squares where locals sit drinking coffee at the many outdoor cafes. There is a also a good selection of boutiques, bars and restaurants which contrast with the ancient buildings.

Just outside the city walls is a lively market selling organic fruit and vegetables and locally produced cheeses as well as handicrafts. Stroll along the waterfront in either direction for somewhere to take a dip in the water and for the stunning views of the bay. If you fancy something a little more strenuous climb the many steps past the goats and wild flowering pomegranates to see Kotor's ancient fortress, and for breathtaking views of the fjord.
