Tivat
Tivat is a garden city and in its mild Mediterranean climate oleander, bougainvillea and other exotic semi-tropical plants grow in profusion. It is considered the youngest town in the Boka Kotorska and in the past was a preferred location for the rich to build their summerhouses. One is now home to Tivat's museum. The town also has the only airport on the Montenegrin coast.
A string of islets lies in the azure waters at the southern end of the bay. The Isle of flowers, a lush green islet with the ruins of a 13th century monastery; St Marko, once a tourist holiday island; and Lady of Mercy, the site of a 15th century Franciscan monastery.
The wild and unspoilt peninsula of Lustica lies just across the bay: acre upon acre of olive groves and meadow land with numerous little bays and solitary coves hidden along the rocky coastline, many of which can only be reached by boat. The wonderfully authentic little fishing villages of Kakrc and Bjelila are communities of traditional stone houses in tranquil settings with stunning views across the bay of Tivat. The swimming platform at Bjelila makes it hard to resist jumping into the perfectly clear turquoise water.
A popular beach is Blue Horizon which lies at the end of a beautiful valley and is backed by a shady olive grove and pine woods. The warm shallow water makes it a very safe place to bathe. For a magical experience try swimming in the deep irridescent water of the 'Blue Grotto', Montenegro's famous sea cave.
